Mrs. Chiba was a professional seamstress, and a natural fit for the Senninbari Project. She remembers her home, vegetable garden, and rice field fondly. Though her family remains together, it must be a challenge for her grandchildren, one in high school and one in junior high school, to prepare for Japan’s rigorous entrance exams in such a small place. Mrs. Chiba looks forward to relocating their community, but though they are actively looking for an appropriate place, it will be four to five years before they can move from their temporary shelter at the school. Their own homes are irrevocably lost, some of them are underwater now at high tide because the land was geographically altered, sunken, in the powerful earthquake.
